About

Dr Danae Maniatis

Portrait of Danae Maniatis

I work on nature-based solutions, from the science to the finance: forests and their biodiversity, land restoration, carbon markets and the international policy around them.

I started as a forest scientist. My doctorate at the University of Oxford was on measuring above-ground biomass in the forests of the Congo Basin for REDD+. I then spent more than six years as staff with UN agencies: with FAO in Rome, in the UN-REDD Programme, and with UNDP in New York and Bangkok, where I led the Asia-Pacific Climate and Forest Team. Since 2019 I have worked as an independent adviser.

I have lived in Europe, South-East Asia, Africa and the United States, and have worked in Asia, Africa, and South and Central America. The work has involved fieldwork, working with local communities and with private sector executives, and advising government ministers.

I have supported several governments in the UNFCCC negotiations. I was nominated by Belgium to the UNFCCC roster of experts, and I am an Article 6.4 Expert Reviewer, selected by the Article 6.4 Supervisory Body for 2026 to 2028. I am also a member of Science for High Integrity Frameworks to Transform Carbon Markets (SHIFT-CM), led by Yale University and The Nature Conservancy.

I keep the work close to the current science, and I mentor professionals moving into climate and nature roles and students shaping research on nature and sustainability.
